Experience

As managing principal, Brendan is a key figure at Talbot Olivier. He leads the defamation and media practice group and is a principal in the litigation and regulatory and compliance practice group.

Brendan advises and represents listed companies (both in Australia and overseas), small to medium sized companies, individuals, media organisations, government representatives and major Australian corporations in a variety of complex commercial disputes and defamation issues.

He is well recognised for his particular expertise and experience in providing pre-litigation advice in relation to contractual disputes (particularly with respect to construction law), corporate disputes and trade practices, intellectual property and defamation issues. 

Prior to joining Talbot Olivier in 1997, Brendan gained considerable experience as a lawyer within the litigation practice group at Parker & Parker working principally on Federal Court litigation and criminal law cases. 

He was appointed as Talbot Olivier's managing principal in 2008. 

Career highlights 

  • Provides ongoing advice and representation to one of Australia's main broadcasters in matters of pre-publication advice, defamation proceedings, suppression order applications, applications for release of evidence in proceedings, intellectual property disputes, broadcasting compliance and contractual disputes.
  • Acted for a substantial government organisation in defending a $27 million Supreme Court claim for an alleged breach of an agreement for the supply of broadcasting content.
  • Acts for insolvency practitioners and property and business owners in various insolvency disputes.
  • Acts for banks and other financial institutions in default recovery work.
  • Acted for a mining company in a Supreme Court dispute over the ownership of a substantial mining interest that was subsequently sold by the client.
  • Acted for senior public servants and politicians in relation to matters published in the media.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Laws.
