Experience

Jarrod is an experienced lawyer providing advice related to the liquor and hospitality industries. He works with clients on matters including sales and acquisitions, acquiring new licences, purchasing existing licences and businesses, varying licence conditions and defending disciplinary actions.

With a background in commercial and property related matters, Jarrod has an in-depth knowledge of issues concerning buying and selling licensed premises. He conducts due diligence and contract negotiations and advises on licence transfers, property issues and leasing matters.

Prior to commencing his law career, Jarrod managed his family's country hotel and studied hospitality management. He has also worked in wineries, restaurants, function centres, entertainment venues and international hotels and resorts. This experience has provided him with a unique understanding of the liquor industry and related business issues, enabling him to understand risks and identify opportunities.

Career highlights

  • Acted for purchasers, vendors and landlords in numerous transactions for the sale and purchase of hotels ranging from small country hotels to large metropolitan hotels.
  • Provided advice to the Australian Hotels Association on various legislative amendments and the likely impact on its members.
  • Negotiated with police and the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner for the introduction of free poker into licensed premises in South Australia.
  • Acquired the first South Australian direct sales licence, which allows liquor sales via the internet, phone or fax, without the need for licensed premises.
  • Acted on behalf of applicants and objectors in respect of applications for new gaming machine licences involving the social impact test.
  • Prepared operating and profit sharing agreements approved by the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner in South Australia.
  • Acted on many contested matters against local council, residents and other licensed premises resulting in his clients successfully acquiring new liquor licences.
  • Advised and acted for wineries and grape growers on issues arising from the management and acquisition of wineries and producer's licences.
